Frequently asked questions
You have questions, and we have the answers!
Have your own question? Contact us so we can answer it!
Are Swanson's apples coated in wax?
No, our apples are naturally bright, colorful, and shiny thanks to the ideal growing conditions in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. They are simply washed with mountain-fresh water and dried before being sold — no wax needed!
What's in Swanson’s apple cider?
Our cider is made with a blend of our fresh, Montana-grown apples only — that’s really it!
It takes approximately one 800-pound bin of our apples to produce 50 gallons of fresh-pressed apple cider.

Which apple variety is the most popular?
Our McIntosh apples are the favorite among both adults and children, beating out all other varieties we offer.
I'm a school nutrition director. How can I order apples for my school?
Our mission is to get Montana-grown apples into more schools across the state. You can order your own and see our delivery routes here.
What cuts will I get with a half share of beef?
You can find more beef information here.

Do you ship out of state?
We do not currently ship apples or apple cider out of state. However, starting in 2026, we will offer limited out-of-state shipping for our beef (minimum ¼ or ½ beef orders). Availability depends on specific delivery routes.
Please contact us to find out if your location may be included.
When is apple season?
We begin harvesting most of our apple varieties around the third week of September. Our season kicks off with U-Pick the last two weekends of September, followed by our storefront opening in the first week of October. Apples and apple cider are typically available at our packing shed through the end of the year.
What is Swanson’s redevelopment program?
In 2023, we planted over 2,000 new Ruby McIntosh trees as part of our ongoing orchard redevelopment program to ensure the future of our apple production.
How do you prevent bruising during apple harvesting?
Apples bruise easily, so our harvest crews take extra care by picking them with their palms instead of their fingers to keep them in top condition.
What is apple pomace?
Apple pomace is the solid material that’s left after apples are pressed for cider. It’s made up of the peel, core, seeds, stems, and other soft parts of the fruit.
It’s still rich in fiber and nutrients, and makes a great addition to our cattle’s diet!

How long will my cider last?
Each cider jug has a “Sell By” date on the label. Be sure to drink it by that date or freeze it to extend its shelf life. If you freeze your cider, plan to drink it right after it has fully thawed—don’t refreeze.
Who processes your beef?
For local buyers, our beef is processed by Bar MW Meats. For out-of-state orders, we use Hamilton Packing. Learn more about our beef program here.
